Rebel goes rogue on pirating

The new Nine/Fairfax streaming service Stan is all about helping local media companies stop viewers using VPN’s to access premium content from abroad.

So it was a little awkward at this morning’s press conference on the launch when comedienne/brand ambassador Rebel Wilson went off message and announced to the room that she would have to get a VPN in order to access Stan in the US, where she is based.

“We’ll have to get you Stan when you’re in Australia” CEO of StreamCo Mike Sneesby told Wilson only to have her quip: “and I’ll have to steal an IP address when I’m in the US,” much to the amusement of the room full of journos.

Sneesby was quick to cut her off.

The other awkward moment was when Sneesby spoke about how Stan was a “clean palate” with no negative connotations…

A tech journalist quickly challenged him noting that there was an Eminem song “Stan” involving a crazed fan who ends up committing suicide.

Sneesby professed that he was unaware of the song, which begs the question of whether he read this morning’s press release on the announcement of the consumer brand where Wilson is quoted as saying: “It’s awesome to be back in Australia and I love being here to promote Stan. It’s not named after the Eminem song, I checked.

“When I was a kid we all used to binge at Sizzler, now all anyone is doing is binge-watching TV. So it’s great that with Stan, Australians will now have a streaming service like the kick-ass ones we already have in the US.”

Totes awks, as the pirating generation might say.
