Return of The Block tops the million mark while Dancing With The Stars rises for finale

The BlockThe return of Nine’s renovation competition The Block helped the channel win the night with a share of 23.4 per cent, as rival Ten’s share slipped below the double digit mark once again on Sunday.

The Block debuted last night at 7pm with a metro audience of 1.074m and was the most-watched show in the 16-39 demographic, taking home the second-most watched show title in the 18-49 and 25-54 demographics, behind Nine’s 60 Minutes which was watched by 1.137m at 8.20pm.

The debut of The Block was down on the launch of The Block Glasshouse, which kicked off at the end of July last year with a metro audience of 1.374m, however that number was driven in part by the network’s decision to simulcast the renovation show across its multi-channels Go and Gem, while last night’s premiere only aired on Nine.

However it was well up on the launch of The Block: Triple Threat which pulled in 860,000 metro viewers at the end of January.

It did manage to out-rate Seven’s Sunday Night, which grabbed 1.049m metro viewers in the 7pm timeslot leading into the first finale episode of Dancing with the Stars which was watched by 867,000 at 8pm, up on last week’s audience of 671,000.

Over on Ten, a repeat of Modern Family at 7.30pm drew a metro audience of 388,000, climbing to 457,000 for a second repeat episode of the US comedy at 8pm.

The channel only managed an audience share of 9.4 per cent, beaten by the ABC’s share of 13.4 per cent. Seven claimed second place with a share of 22.9 per cent.

On the ABC, Grand Designs was watched by 866,000 at 7.40pm with Vera, airing at 8.30pm, claiming an audience of 666,000.

In sport, Nine’s afternoon NRL match which saw the Cronulla Sharks take on the Manly Sea Eagles was watched by 471,000 viewers in Sydney and Brisbane. Seven’s broadcast of Melbourne taking on GWS in the AFL grabbed 321,000 viewers in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
