RMIT welcomes Morry Schwartz as Adjunct Professor

Publisher of The Saturday Paper Morry Schwartz has been appointed adjunct professor (journalism) at RMIT University.

The announcement:

Publisher and media philanthropist Morry Schwartz has been appointed Adjunct Professor (Journalism) at RMIT University.

Adjunct Professor Schwartz has been a publisher since 1973 when he first established Outbound Press, one of the first Australian independent book publishers.

He is the director of BlackInc Books and the publisher of the Quarterly Essay and The Monthly. In a bold move, he also recently launched a new weekly newspaper The Saturday Paper.

Dr Antonio Castillo, RMIT Program Manager for the Bachelor of Communication (Journalism), said the appointment was a great opportunity for the School of Media and Communication.

“The selection of Morry Schwartz as Adjunct Professor is a reflection of his extraordinary commitment to deepening the quality of the media and the intellectual discussion in Australia,” he said.

Adjunct Professor Schwartz’s publications are seen as an independent voice in Australian media, providing a wide range of political, intellectual and cultural opinion and featuring some of Australia’s best writers.

Professor Martyn Hook, Dean of the School of Media and Communication, said: “Morry Schwartz has wholeheartedly demonstrated of the future of media and the validity of discourse to the ongoing development of Australian culture.

The MonthlyThe Quarterly Essay and now The Saturday Paper all contribute significantly to the value of the written word and seek to sustain quality journalism in our community.”

The honourary appointment is for three years until February 2016.

During his appointment Adjunct Professor Morry Schwartz will provide academic and industry leadership, participate in a combination of public events, deliver lectures and mentor undergraduate and post-graduate students.

RMIT delivers one of Australia’s most highly regarded university journalism qualifications in the country. The program’s combination of theory and practice is highly recognised by the news media industry and by journalism academics in Australia and overseas.
