Guy Pearce in talks to play Rupert Murdoch in film ‘Ink’
The rise of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire is the subject of a new Danny Boyle film, titled Ink, with Australian actor and Hollywood star Guy Pearce reportedly in talks to play the role of the media mogul.
Deadline reports Ink will be “an explosive cinematic rollercoaster about a group of visionaries and misfits who had an idea for a new kind of news – one that would give the people what they want and would change the face of the world we live in today”.
The feature is said to be a Studiocanal, Media Res and House Productions feature, with original playwright James Graham adapting it for screen. Shooting is expected to begin in October.
The original stage production follows The Sun – at the time a struggling newspaper which Murdoch intends to transform into a must-read agenda-setter. He hires Larry Lamb to run the paper, who will reportedly be played by Jack O’Connell. The story then tracks the legendary rivalry between The Sun and The Mirror, and how the UK tabloid press grew into behemoths.
Boyle’s directorial credits include Trainspotting, The Beach, 28 Days Later and 28 Years Later, Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Steve Jobs, and Yesterday.
Pearce, meanwhile, rose to prominence locally on Neighbours as Mike Young. He starred in local films such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in the 90s, before going on to Hollywood productions including Memento, The King’s Speech, and L.A. Confidential.
