Scaredy Todd?
Regular readers may recall that Gruen Transfer regular Russel Howcroft was bullish when challenged to take on fellow panellist Todd Sampson’s agency in the show’s The Pitch segment.
Sadly it looks like we’re not going to see GPY&R go head-to-head with Leo Burnett in the advertising panel show anytime soon. Sampson tells Mumbrella:
“Maybe we’ll do a town hall meeting in the last episode of the last series of the very last Gruen Transfer.”
I was chatting to a friend about the throwdown in that episode of Gruen about how great I thought it would be to see Todd take on Russell, though my friend wisely suggested that seeing that happen would ruin the show – whoever lost would potentially be seen by the viewership as less savvy/smart/clever than the winner, making their opinion less important. Besides, if Russell pulled it off, he’d get even more big-headed.

shocking posture Russell!
Forced to side with one or other, I enjoy Russell’s lighter style slightly more than Todd’s deep and meaningful demeanour. However, I agree with Todd’s comment above,100%! Keeping all these egos in balance and growing the show to a consistent rater is an amazing achievement. Why endanger that balance for one program of extra controversy. Definitely the last ever Gruen would be the only place for it.
PS Russell’s posture was a killer

Todd rides the tallest of high horses but his biggest client paying at Leo Burnett is cigarettes. Prior to that he was flogging junk food to kids. It’s time he came down off that saddle.
