Tom Cruise movie takes top box office slot

Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion has topped the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia weekend top 20 in its debut week, taking more than $3.3 million.

The Universal-distributed flick brought in $3,318,661 across 353 screens in Australia, averaging $9,401 per screen.

Animated comedy The Croods, which made nearly $3 million, averaged $5,006 across its543 screens.

Long-running comedy series Scary Movie released the fifth film this weekend, while zombie comedy Warm Bodies also made its debut. Both films made more than $1.25 million.

Jurrassic Park 3D and Danny Boyle’s crime thriller Trance fell the furthest, coming down six places to 11 and 12.
