The Hoopla co-owner Deanne Weir steps up on Screen Australia board

Media investor Deanne Weir, who part owns women’s website The Hoopla, is the new deputy chair of Australia’s TV and film funding board Screen Australia.

Her appointment after five years on the board comes after the departure of departure of Ian Robertson. Robertson, whose five year term on the board expired on June 30.

Further appointments of The Sapphires producer Rosemary Blight and media and entertainment lawyer Joan Peters bring the total number of board members of Screen Australia to nine.

Weir has previously worked at Telstra and Austar, and is a member of several boards Access Innovation Holdings Pty Ltd (Ai-Media) and the International Women’s Development Agency.

Glen Boreham, chair of Screen Australia, said: “Deanne Weir’s passion and commitment to the Australian screen production sector, along with her contribution to the board over the past five years has been outstanding and I’m thrilled to confirm her as our deputy chair.”

Blight’s career spans over 20 years and includes production of 2012 hit The Sapphires, and the Cannes Film Festival’s closing night film in 2010, The Tree. She is also a past board member of both Screen NSW and Screen Tasmania.

Screen Australia is currently searching for a new CEO after the ousting of Ruth Harley. Last month Harley cited “shiny-shoed pirates and silver-tongued parrots” she encountered in the role.
