September podcast ranker: an unchanged top 5 while total downloads increase

It is an unchanged top three podcasts in September’s Triton Podcast Ranker, in the second month since moving to listener numbers, rather than total downloads, however total downloads were up to 52 million.

LiSTNR/SCA’s Hamish and Andy top the list once again, with Audioboom’s Casefile True Crime and Life Uncut with Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne (ARN/iHeartMedia) following suit.

This month saw several debuts into the Top 100, with The Chaser Report (Acast), Drive with Tom Elliot (Nine Radio), RedHanded (Audioboom) and more making the list for the first time.

The new metrics again proved to be more representative than the previous ‘downloads’ ranking, as indicated with podcasts such as The Kyle and Jackie O Show on ARN/iHeartMedia, which while had 1.72 million total downloads across the month, published 91 episodes, with 331,838 listens, compared to the Hamish and Andy Show, which had 883,609 listens, despite only five episodes.

Other radio show podcasts, regularly publishing multiple snippets after each daily show, experienced a similar story, with the Triple M Footy Show reporting 165,664 listens from 98 episodes.

Hamish and Andy proved their vast popularity this month, with the pair’s new podcast Hamish and Andy’s Remembering Project delivering 80,675 listens, despite no new shows.

SCA chief content officer, Dave Cameron said: “As Australia’s biggest creator and publisher of audio content, we are thrilled to see Hamish & Andy retain their No. 1 podcast in Australia. As well as having the most podcasts in the top 20 Australian podcasts, all of those podcasts have improved their ranking, demonstrating that our breadth of content is resonating with listeners with a great mix between original podcasts and our radio and sport podcasts.”
