Seven Network announces new 7NEWS Brisbane team after Sharyn Ghidella axing
The Seven Network has announced a new co-anchor for 7NEWS Brisbane after axing long-running presenter, Sharyn Ghidella.
On Saturday, the network confirmed that award-winning journalist Sarah Greenhalgh will join Max Futcher as the co-anchor of the flagship 6pm weekday bulletin from Monday, 21 October.
Greenhalgh first began her career as a traffic helicopter reporter in Brisbane, followed by stints in regional newsrooms like Mackay and Cairns, before returning to the Queensland capital in 2013.
Most recently, she worked as a reporter on Seven’s Spotlight program.
“Max has been an incredibly supportive colleague and mate of mine for the past 11 years now, so to be sharing the news desk with him while also returning home to my original 7NEWS family is a huge thrill,” Greenhalgh said.
“Sharing people’s stories remains my greatest passion, so in addition to delivering the news to Queenslanders each night, I look forward to continuing investigations with the 7NEWS Spotlight team as well.”
Seven Network director of news and current affairs and Seven West Media Editor-in-Chief, Anthony De Ceglie, added: “Sarah is an extremely accomplished journalist who has had a remarkable career rise that all started as a reporter in regional Queensland.
“We’re incredibly excited for this next chapter in her career, where she won’t just be the co-anchor for our must-watch 6pm bulletin alongside Max but will also be leader across the newsroom championing journalism and investigations.”
To coincide with the new-look anchor team, Seven has also announced that local journalist and presenter, Katrina Blowers, has been promoted to Queensland chief reporter.
In the role, Blowers will tackle the most high-profile stories and investigations throughout Queensland.
“Katrina is one of the fiercest and most respected news reporters in the country and in this new role she will take the lead on uncovering and delivering north-east Australia’s biggest stories to our national audiences,” De Ceglie said.
Blowers will continue to share 4pm weekday presenting duties with Samantha Heathwood, who also remains anchor of the 6pm weekend bulletin for 7NEWS.
The news comes after Ghidella announced her shock axing on Facebook in July, writing at the time: “It wasn’t quite how I expected it to end at Channel 7. I was actually sitting at the hairdressers for work, when I got the call informing me, that after 17 years with the network, my time was up.”
She has since moved back to Network 10 as presenter of Queensland’s 10 News First.
