Seven on target to wrap up ratings year during Olympics

Seven may win the official TV ratings year during its Olympics coverage after coming from behind to win last week’s ratings battle, taking the network to a lead of 14 weeks to three over Nine.

Because the official ratings year excludes the long Christmas summer holidays and Easter, the official battle only covers 40 weeks, leaving Seven needing just seven more wins to seal a victory for 2016.

Seven has the rights to this year’s Olympics, which usually guarantees weekly ratings wins for whichever network covers the event. The Olympics begins in seven weeks’ time and runs for just over a fortnight.

After trailing Nine on the progressive ratings all week, Seven’s stronger performance on Saturday got the network home for the week with a share last night of 21.9% to Nine’s 11.6%, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.

As a result, Seven beat Nine for the week by 19.2% to 18.2%. Ten’s share for the week was 15.4%.

Seven was helped to its win by thanks to its Saturday night football. The game, which saw Geelong Cats top the AFL ladder by beating Western Bulldogs, rated strongly in Melbourne (299,000) and Adelaide (77,000).

Nine’s best performer of the night was Nine News which rated 856,000 across the five city metro.

And Ten’s best showing was Wallabies vs England second rugby test, which delivered a national metro audience of 556,000.

The coming ratings week is set to be another tight battle between Seven and Nine. Seven’s House Rules enters its finals week, while Nine is likely to win Wednesday by a big margin thanks to the second State of Origin game.
