Seven West Media completes the integration of Community News into its portfolio

Seven West Media has completed the integration of the 24 individual titles into its West Australian portfolio. Seven West took over News Corp Australia’s 50.1% stake in Community Newspaper Group in May 2019.

The websites of each title now sit as verticals on the Perth Now site and will all operate under The West Australian’s editor in chief Anthony De Ceglie and Community News Group editorial director Amanda Keenan.

The Community News titles have now been absorbed into Seven West Media’s portfolio

The 13 print Community News titles have also been refreshed as part of the integration. Keenan said everything is being done by the publisher to give the titles the best chances in the current climate.

“The challenges we’re all facing have only served to reinforce the importance of community, and of community newspapers. What a privilege it is to inform, reassure and inspire people at a grassroots level – during times good and bad. Our team of local reporters is boosted by the firepower of The West Australian’s integrated newsroom to deliver the neighbourhood news that really matters to people – all in dynamic, great looking and much-loved mastheads,” she said.

Community News and regional advertising director Marnie McKeown said: “This is a really exciting time for Community News, with the resourcing of The West Australian and Perth Now newsrooms and the refreshed mastheads we are already receiving great feedback at both a consumer and trade level.”

Regional and local community news has taken a hit over the last few weeks with News Corp Australia ceasing print on a number of its titles and Australian Community Media (ACM) following suit. Independent regional publishers have also felt the sting of the economic downturn.

SWM has also faced redundancies and called for pay cuts, with WA-based The Sunday Times editor Michael Beach exiting the business.
