Seven wins the week as AFL Grand Final dominates TV

Saturday’s AFL Grand Final dominated the Saturday TV ratings, pulling in 2.601m metro viewers for the West Coast vs Collingwood match and 2.632m for the post match presentations. Across the entire country, the match pulled in 3.378m viewers.

Of that audience, 1.247m came from Melbourne, compared to just 345,000 in Sydney, and 247,000 in Adelaide. Unsurprisingly, Perth pulled in the second biggest audience for the match, with 471,000 metro viewers.

The Grand Final also helped Seven to a weekly win, with its main channel pulling in 20.7% of the audience for the week.

The game helped Seven to a 22.5% main channel share on Saturday, compared to Nine’s 15.5% and Ten’s 9.8%. ABC managed 10.5% while SBS pulled in 5.2%.

Across total network, Saturday saw Seven achieve a 34.6% share, Nine 25.7%, ABC 15.2% and Ten 14.9%.

The match was also the most watched in key advertising demographics 25-54, 16-39 and total grocery shopper and child.

Later in the evening, Seven’s airing of the Women’s T20 International cricket pulled in 571,000 metro viewers for the pre match show. The first innings attracted 402,000 viewers. Across the match, the game pulled in over 2.074m in metro areas, making it the highest ever audience for women’s cricket.

Seven News, which aired directly after the AFL, was the most watched non-AFL program of the day, with 1.390m metro viewers. Nine News was the second most watched show outside of the AFL, with 677,000 metro viewers.

ABC News came a close third with 675,000 metro viewers.

The most watched drama of the night was ABC’s repeat of psychological thriller Exile, which attracted 380,000 metro viewers.

Nine’s Back to the Future garnered 377,000 metro viewers.

The match helped Seven to a narrow overall win for the week, with 20.7% of the audience for its main channel, compared to Nine’s 19.6%. ABC narrowly beat Ten for the week, with 12.2% and 12.0% respectively. SBS managed 4.9% for its main channel.

Nine’s most watched program of the week was its Sunday edition of The Block, which pulled in 1.264m metro viewers. The show’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday episodes also entered the top 20.

Ten’s only entrant into the top 20 shows for the week was its Thursday episode of The Bachelor, which pulled in 836,00 metro viewers.
