‘Several hundred roles’ to be cut at Prime Video globally

Hundreds of roles across Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios will be cut by the end of this week.

In an email sent to staff on Wednesday (US time), seen by Mumbrella, SVP of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, Mike Hopkins, confirmed the news, saying the move has been made for the “long-term success of our business”.

“As a result, we’ve identified opportunities to reduce or discontinue investments in certain areas while increasing our investment and focus on content and product initiatives that deliver the most impact,” Hopkins wrote.

“As a result of these decisions, we will be eliminating several hundred roles across the Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios organization.”

The email states that all US employees will be notified today, while “most other regions” will contacted by the end of the week.

”We are following local processes, which may include time for consultation with employee representative bodies, possibly resulting in longer timelines to communicate in some countries,” Hopkins wrote.

It is currently unclear if the Australian offices will be impacted by the cuts. Mumbrella has contacted the local and international teams for further comment.

Twitch, which is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, also announced this week that it will be cutting 500 staff.

The news comes only a day after Prime Video announced it has partnered with sports network beIN SPORTS to launch its first standalone live sports channel for Australian users.

BeIN SPORTS has the broadcast rights to a number of football tournaments including Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, the English Football League, the Carabao Cup, Scottish Professional Football League and the Africa Cup of Nations.

The channel will also include tennis, with the ATP and WTA tours, as well as the European Rugby Union.
