Shine Australia to produce Australian version of Embarrassing Bodies
Shine Australia is to produce an Australian version of the UK medical show Embarrassing Bodies for Foxtel later this year.
Production for Embarrassing Bodies Down Under will start next month, with the series expected to air on Foxtel’s LifeStyle You channel in the second half of 2013.
The host of the UK series, Dr Christian Jessen, will appear in the Australian version, although not in a hosting capacity. A Foxtel spokeswoman said he would work closely with a cadre of Australian doctors, who have yet to be announced.
Mark Fennessy, CEO of Shine Australia, said: “Embarrassing Bodies has become a health and lifestyle phenomenon in the UK. Together with the fabulous Dr Christian and a talented team of local doctors we look forward to making it appointment to view television for the Australian audience.”
Hannah Barnes, Foxtel’s head of programming and commissions of the LifeStyle Group, said: “Embarrassing Bodies is one of LifeStyle You’s most successful properties, so it is a huge win for Foxtel not only to have secured the rights to a local version, but also to have Dr Christian involved in this new production.”
“Embarrassing Bodies is a groundbreaking lifestyle format that has become a global hit. The franchise continues to grow here in Australia in terms of ratings, which shows that Aussies are more than ready for a local version” she said.
Just like its UK counterpart, this series will feature an array of embarrassed patients, young and old, who suffer from visually shocking and personally mortifying conditions.
“Groundbreaking”?

This is very depressing. Does Foxtel have no ideas of its own? Reproducing foreign formats seems to have become its speciality. With a lot more competing platforms coming soon it may regret this strategy. Some real effort in developing original formats and throwing these into the foreign format mix would be a commercially sensible way to go.

Between this and Rat Bastards, Hardcore Pawn, Animal Stuffers, Celebrity Splash and all the other horrid reality “entertainment” on TV at the moment, is there any room for good old drama and lifestyle content anymore (though probably very exxy in comparison)? These imported show formats are getting really stale really quickly. We’re also getting a local format of Aussie Pickers. Go go innovation.
It’d be awesome if Aussie networks could be a little more brave and try new formats and ideas.

As a broad rule, taking successful UK Free-To-Air programs and rehashing them for Pay-TV in Australia has a dim history.
But good luck.

Im looking forward to “A Current Affair” and “Today Tonight” having a segment about this “new” tv show – it would attract their demographic!!

Makes the old Extreme Makeover look like Sunday School in the fifties.
I shall NEVER forget the smegma episode . . . truly ground-breaking.
