This may apply across the board, but it is particularly relevant in digital.
The sheer stupidity of some clueless non digital marketing people continues to baffle and anger me. How do they have a job? How will they continue to work as web grows?
A brilliant digital all rounder once summed it up thusly: tell the client it’s a trilogy: features, time and budget. When two are the way the client wants them, the third will not be.
So, if you want lots of features and have no time, your budget is going to blow out.
If you have not much money, but lots of time, you might get some features.
Etc. Giving clients everything at a cheap rate is just a recipe for bankruptcy.
I just tell them the truth: if your cousin’s best friend’s boyfriend can do your website for $5k, then do that and come and see us when you’re serious.

Brilliant. Yep, we’ve heard the “we’re looking for an agency that is happy to grow with me as we go on the journey”. Journey!! Much as we like travel, the only cheque at the end of those kinds of journeys would be an unemployment one. Why don’t they just say we’re looking for an agency that is “happy to subsidise our business costs” and leave it at that?
