Spider-Man and Toy Story 4 continue to dominate school holiday box office
Spider-Man: Far From Home has continued its winning box office streak bringing in $6.5 million across 722 screens over the weekend. Despite a 37% drop from last weekend, the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hit a running total in Australia of $28.686 million.
In second place Pixar’s Toy Story 4 also maintained its strong showing for the school holidays just down by 3% from the previous weekend, taking $5.1 Million across 445 screens. The latest installation of the animated toys’ adventures has now taken $34 million inAustralia.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 experienced a bump from school holidays in its fourth weekend. The animated movie from Universal focuses on Max the terrier, whose owner has recently gotten married and had a baby. The film earned $2.387 million across 318 screens, a 25% increase from the previous weekend, making its total earnings $11.7m.
The live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin also experienced a school-holidays bonus, jumping up to fifth position in its eighth weekend and earning $872,000 from 495 screens.
Beatles-inspired romicom Yesterday slipped to fourth after debuting in second place two weeks ago. Its weekend earnings of $1.656 million added to its running total of $9.588 million in Australia.
The school holidays proved a tough environment for the weekend’s debutants: horror film Crawl, comedy Stuber and independent comedy Booksmart, which came in seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Crawl, a film about killer alligators infesting homes after a hurricane in Florida, brought in $600,502 across 183 screens. Stuber received $554,806 across 244 screens, and Booksmart, which stars Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever as over achieving high school students, earned just $443,976 from 221 screens.

These figures are not surprising. The most popular films will always be the well scripted, theatrically constructed and directed stories.
Many an Australian wannabe filmmaker ( and most of the established ones) should look beyond the hype, the special effects, and the camera angles, and start feeling the heart of real filmmaking.
We make a lot of film and television drama in this country, but most of it is schlock.
