Stage stars might be in Sapphires film

Farmer and Anu in the current stage version of The SapphiresThe stars of the musical The Sapphires, Christine Anu, Casey Donovan, Hollie Andrew and Kylie Farmer, could be the leads of the upcoming film adaptation.

“All options are to be considered – both known actors and those completely unknown, hence the open cast call,” producer Rosemary Blight told Encore.

The producers recently announced a nationwide casting process (www.sapphiresopencall.com), looking for four Indigenous women (aged 16-28) to play the lead roles.

The success of Bran Nue Dae (with performances by singers Jessica Mauboy and Missy Higgins) is an indication that there is a market for fresh, Indigenous-themed musicals.
