Two entertainment companies have hired new marketing bosses with AHL appointing Ian Sutherland as group director of marketing and The Star has announced the recruitment of Richard Howarth as general manager of sales, marketing and entertainment.

Sutherland has worked in London and Los Angeles for film studios including Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks and MGM as executive vice president of international distribution and marketing. He has been working for AHL for the past three years as general manger for alternate content, and in the new role will be responsible for all AHL brands including Event cinemas Australia and New Zealand, Greater Union, Rydges Hotels, QT Hotels, and Art Series Hotels.

Former Telstra and Defence Force Recruiting marketer Howarth parted ways from the William Hill Group after it took over the Sportingbet Group a year ago, and will head up The Star Casino’s entertainment, tourism and hospitality team after spending the last eight months as a business consultant.

Sutherland said: “I am genuinely excited about this role and look forward to ensuring that all AHL brands continue to be market leaders and working closely with David to ensure the high level of creativity and innovation continues”.

At the Star Howarth has been tasked with “delivering exceptional experiences” across the brand’s venues.

Mr Howarth said: “I am delighted to be joining The Star and to be working with some of Australia and the world’s leading tourism and hospitality professionals.  The passion and excitement of The Star’s 4,500 work force is already apparent and will be a great asset. I am very much looking forward to working with the team to build momentum for this world-class casino that is evidently connected to the fabric of Sydney.”
