Star Trek tops Australian box office on opening weekend
The sequel to the 2009 reboot of the classic Star Trek series had a strong weekend debut, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
Star Trek Into Darkness took $5,257,366 across 486 screen in Australia, pushing Iron Man 3 into second place for the weekend. The Paramount-distributed film made almost $11,000 per screen.
Two other films made their debut this weekend as well, Icon’s Spring Breakers and Sony’s Evil Dead. Both made under $200,000, although Evil Dead was only shown on five screens, giving it an average of $23,411 per screen.
The Place Beyond the Pines climbed from ninth place last week to fourth this week, taking in $627,686 across the 64 screens on which it was shown.
Animated comedy The Croods remained in the top 10, despite being in its seventh week. Escape From Planet Earth, another animated comedy in its seventh week, fell from 11 to 16.
Adventures in Zambezia fell the furthest, from 12 to 19 and making $42,217.
Ok it is true I am a little bit of a Star Trek geek but trust me this film is worth seeing, there are some great set pieces and it is best seen on the big screen, now then when is the next Star Wars film….
