State of Origin breaks viewership record with 2.5m
An audience of over 2.5m viewers watched Queensland beat New South Wales in the first State of Origin match of the year.
The match – which aired on Nine – took 2.51m viewers across the five city metro markets, according to preliminary ratings from OzTam.
The result was the best the first match has performed since the introduction of OzTam in 2001. Last year’s first game took 2.227m.
The post-match wrap up rated 2.009m, although it wasn’t aired in Adelaide. The pre-match show which didn’t air in Perth or Adelaide, took 1.565m viewers.
Looks like a cracking result on the surface, but how does it compare to last year’s ratings?
PS. Loved the Qld victory!
Hi Tradie
Good point, It was the best the first game has done since the introduction of OzTam in 2001. See addition.

Good result for Nine, great result for Queensland.
Good result Nine, but not so good result for we viewers who are still stuck with watching your Standard Definition transmissions of major events such as this. Why did we all go out and buy HD sets?
If you have sole live broadcast rights, you should be forced to transmit it in HD. I wish some of the sponsors put their foot down and demanded that viewers get the best viewing experience. The “Prometheus” adverts were hammered during State of Origin but looked very average in SD……I would be disappointed with my spend if I was the marketing manager of the company paying for these ads.
The ratings equates to 2.51 million people who are getting conned with sub-standard broadcast transmissions. Well done Nine.
