Summer schedules see Seven and Nine fight for near equal share

Seven and Nine fought for an almost equal share of the ratings last night as 60 Minutes and a new episode of The Mentalist won key timeslots for Nine, while Border Security and Coastwatch won in theirs for Seven.

60 Minutes was the top program of the night with 1.196m viewers across the five city metro, while Seven’s nature program Wild Planet: North America averaged 772,000.

And in the 8.30pm timeslot The Mentalist brought Nine an audience of nearly 800,000 as Seven had 669,000 for Bones, preliminary overnight ratings from OzTam show.

The Mentalist and 60 Minutes were also the top two programs in people 25-54, while Border Security was fourth in that demographic. Meanwhile the ARIA Awards live broadcast boosted ratings for Nine’s digital Channel GO!

Nine just won the largest share of the audience with 21.8 per cent ahead of 21.7 per cent for Channel Seven, while Ten’s share was almost half that and with 11.6 per cent ahead of 10.5 per cent for ABC1.

Ten’s launch of its summer schedule moved Modern Family from Sunday to Monday this week, although re-runs of the show will return to Sunday nights next week. In place of the sitcom and Elementary, which is having a winter break in the US, Ten ran feature film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader from 7.30pm to 9.50pm, rating 437,000 viewers.

Meanwhile The Outlaw Michael Howe, an historical drama written by writer and actor Brendan Cowell of The Slap and produced by CJZ, averaged 428,000, falling fourth in the 8.30pm timeslot behind Ten’s film.

Seven News and Border Security won their timeslots ahead of Channel Nine’s News and feature show Summer with the Australian Women’s Weekly at 6pm and 6.30pm, and Coastwatch on Channel Seven at 7pm averaged over 800,000 viewers, ahead of Nine’s Women’s Weekly show.

The ARIA awards on Nine’s digital channel GO! commanded 7.3 per cent of the audience share for the Nine Network. The show had 337,000 metro viewers, making it 29th for the night, however it was 15th in the key advertising demographic of people 25-54.

The top program of the week was Dancing with the Stars on Channel Seven, which had 1.384m viewers on Wednesday night, followed by Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes and News program last Sunday.
