SXSW confirms part of 2021 program will be an online experience

SXSW has announced part of its 2021 program will be online, with SXSW EDU – the iteration promoting teaching and learning – running from 9-11 March and SXSW Online from 16-20 March 2021.

Earlier this year, SXSW was one of the first major events to be cancelled due to COVID-19, just a week before it was due to take place in Austin, Texas. It was the first cancellation in the festival’s 34-year history.

The event, which attracts swathes of the international advertising industry, is still working with the city of Austin and public health authorities on plans for a physical component to the 2021 line-up.

“The challenge of building a new future is one that we’re excited to tackle,” said CEO and co-founder Roland Swenson.

“This has been such a year of change and we, like the entire world, are reshaping our perspective on how we connect. We’re pleased to introduce SXSW Online as part of our program for 2021, and regardless of platform, we will continue to bring together the brightest minds from creative industries worldwide.”

The digital program will include conference keynotes and sessions, screenings, showcases, networking, and exhibitions. Entries for the digital experience open on 6 October.

In March, at the time of the event’s cancellation, organisers said they were working on an online format for ticket-holders.
