Sydney radio ratings: 2GB and 2Day FM continue to dominate

Syndey’s radio market has seen one of the least eventful sets of radio ratings in recent years with not a single station, breakfast show or drivetime slot gaining or losing more than 1% in share.

The Nielsen survey covering Feb 13 to March 19 and March 27 to April 30 was notable mainly for its maintenance of the status quo.

Talk stations 2GB remained on top with a 0.6 increase to a 16.2% Monday to Sunday share. The ABC’s Triple J had the biggest (although far from calamitous) fall, down by 0.7 to 4.8% share.

Kyle & Jackie O continued to dominate FM breakfast for Austereo’s  2Day FM with an 11.3% share (down 0.4). And Fifi Box and Jules Lund remained strong for the station in drivetime with a 12.2% share. However, The ABC’s Riochard Glover remained on top in drivetime with a 12.4% share.

Austereo boss Guy Dobson told Mumbrella: “It was a very consistent survey. I’m pleased we saw Triple M breakfast with Matty Johns move up from 3.7 to 4.3%. This early, that’s no mean feat.”

Meanwhile, Mix continued its steady progress with share increasing from 5.4% to 5.7%. However its new breakfast show with Claire Hooper and Andrew Rochford dropped back slightly from 5% to 4.7%.

DMG boss Cathy O’Connor told Mumbrella that Classic Rock was showing signs of picking up audience during the daytime after changes to the original playlist policy that was “too niche”. She said: “We can see a shift beginning to happen.”

She also said that the stategy for Nova in the coming months will be to focus on increasing time spent listening. She said: “You’ll be seeing competitions on Nova and that sort of thing.”
