Sydney radio ratings: Big share losses as listeners spend less time with 2GB and KIIS

Sydney’s leading radio stations 2GB, KIIS FM and Smooth FM have all lost a big chunk of overall share. But in a slightly strange survey, no single station reported an equivalent gain.

The cumulative audience for 2GB grew slightly, while KIIS lost audience from its previous record highs. But the relative stability of those audience numbers – and the outsized drop in share – suggests those listeners are spending less time with their favourite radio stations.

Nine Radio’s 2GB held onto its crown in people 10+ with an 11.6% share in the fifth survey of the year, beating ARN’s KIIS FM which garnered a 10% share.

The third-placed Smooth FM also had a 1.4% drop in overall share to 9.9%.

The biggest upward mover was Southern Cross Austereo’s (SCA) Triple M, up 0.9 points. WSFM and Triple J also both recorded a decent gain (0.7 points).

2GB’s Ray Hadley saw a 4.2% drop in mornings, the biggest drop in share for any station in this survey. But Hadley held his cumulative audience, suggesting listeners were tuning in for shorter periods during the survey.

The station declined in other key timeslots as well: Ben Fordham down 3.5% in breakfast, Deborah Knight off 1.9% in afternoons, Chris O’Keefe down 0.8 points in drive and John Stanley back 3.9% in evening.

KIIS FM’s Kyle & Jackie O lost 3.2% in breakfast, trailing behind Fordham in share. However, the breakfast duo Jonesy & Amanda at sister station WSFM gained 1.1%.

The audience is responding well to Kate Ritchie, the newest member of Nova’s breakfast trio, Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie, with the show posting a 0.6% share gain.

Ritchie moved to Breakfast from NOVA’s Drive program earlier this year. That show saw a 1.1% dip with Ricki-Lee Coulter this survey. However, the share was largely on par with the survey from February to March before Ritchie left.

The overall streaming share in survey five was:

  • 2GB: 17.1%
  • KIIS 1065: 10.6%
  • ABC Sydney: 9.3%
  • Smoothfm 95.3: 8.7%
  • Triple J: 5.8%

The streaming breakfast share in survey four was:

  • 2GB: 21.6%
  • KIIS 1065: 15.8%
  • ABC Sydney: 12.5%
  • Triple M: 7.5%
  • 2RN: 7.2%

This survey period ran from 21 May to 24 June and 9 July to 12 August.
