Sydney Roosters players to wear the names of their NRLW counterparts for Women in League round
The names of NRL Women’s players replaced the Steggles logo on the jerseys of male Sydney Roosters players to celebrate the Women in League round.
The accompanying campaign, created by Eleven PR and its content arm Bolt, highlights the story of NRLW captain Simaima Taufa, the first captain of the women’s Sydney Roosters team.
In the launch video, Taufa describes the sacrifices she and her family made to enable her to reach the elite sporting level. Taufa also describes the lessons her late father taught her about resilience, which empowered her to achieve her goal of joining the NRLW team.
At the end of the film, Sydney Roosters NRL captain, Jake Friend, arrives at Taufa’s family home during dinner to present her with a jersey emblazoned with her name.
Taufa said in a statement: “It was hard to get my break in NRL. Like many women, juggling work, family, community commitments and exercise can be tough. I had to spend a lot of time away and sacrifice important family moments, which is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.”
The campaign follows a similar initiative in 2018 from M&C Saatchi Sport and Entertainment in which Roosters players wore the names of influential women instead of the Steggles logo for NRL Women in League Round.
Steggles is a long-time sponsor of the Sydney Roosters.
Steggles head of marketing, Yash Gandhi, said: “As a major sponsor of both the Roosters men’s and women’s team we saw this as a powerful act of recognition for the hard work and sacrifices that Taufa and the entire NRLW team have made.
“We think it is important to show our support of hard-working Australian women and we did that by replacing our logo with the names of Roosters NRLW players. It’s a small but powerful tribute to all hard working women.”
