Dr Mumbo

Talkin’ ‘Bout your punctuation

To Fox Studios in Sydney, and Nine’s annual Upfronts bash.

Micallef: The inverted commas are safe

And for Dr Mumbo the highlight of the brisk presentation (apart from the very fact that it was indeed a brisk 57 minutes this year) came from comedian Shaun Micallef, who had plenty to say about the revival of battle-of-the-demographics panel show Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation which previously lived on Ten.

Micallef told the audience: “When the chap from Nine came to me about being the host of Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, I said ‘You do know it’s been on before, don’t you?’ And they said ‘Yes, sure we do, but the finest generation that ever lived back then, is not necessarily the finest generation now.'”

Referencing both former PM Tony Abbott’s intriguing recent theories about climate change and disgraced wellness influencer Belle Gibson, Micallef went on: “Things change – even in science. And that’s very very true. We all used to think global warming was real. Now we know it’s a Chinese conspiracy.

“Ten years ago, Pluto was a planet. Today it’s the Belle Gibson of the solar system.”

Revealing discussions about making minimal changes to the tried-and-tested format, Micallef added: They said ‘No absolutely not, no changes at all, we want it exactly the way it is although we do want a new set, music, team captains, get rid of baby boomers, bring in Generation Z, have some new games… and a new logo.

“‘But one thing we don’t want to change, Shaun, absolutely not – rest assured – are the inverted commas in the title. Those we love.

“‘Not too sure about you as host , we’ll see how it goes. Maybe grow a beard. But the inverted commas we love.'”

And that, apparently, is how television shows get commissioned.
