Tech journos launch Queens of the Drone Age podcast

Four tech journalists, including former Junkee editor and NITV and SBS’ current science and technology editor, Rae Johnston, have launched Queens of the Drone Age, a weekly technology podcast.

Johnston is joined by Gizmodo’s local editor, Tegan Jones, Good Game Spawn Point presenter, Angharad Yeo, and Mashable’s Australian reporter, Amanda Yeo.

Johnston said the group started the podcast because, “looking out at the podcast landscape, I didn’t see anything that I felt reflected in, so I wanted to create something that would provide that.”

“Rad, Amanda, and Tegan are three people who are absolutely at the top of their game when it comes to technology journalism, and I always learn so much whenever we go on hikes together,” she said.

“I feel like everyone could benefit from being able to listen in on those conversations.”

Over the weekend, the ensemble published a launch trailer offering a small window into what those hikes look like, and what the podcast will sound like.

Mashable’s Yeo added that each episode will act as “basically an invitation to join us in geeking out about tech every week”, while Jones noted that the hosts wanted to create “a smart and informative space that’s also fun and welcoming”.

“No one has to prove themselves here because tech is for everyone,” she said.

The first episode was released yesterday, with future episodes dropping weekly. Queens of the Drone Age also has a presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and will look to get advertisers on board.

“Tech has always been one of my favourite things to talk about,” Yeo, the presenter of the ABC’s Good Game Spawn Point, said.

“It encompasses considerate design, cool gadgets, and whacky creativity. It’s humankind’s way of striving for a better life — whether that be eating better, staying connected, or having fun.

“Getting to explore the wonderful world of tech with three of my best friends — who also happen to be some of the smartest minds in the area — is just the best.”
