Telstra follows up Jimmy Barnes ad with one featuring Magda Szubanski
Telstra has rolled out the second spot in its “we want to be famous for it” campaign which uses celebrities posing as Telstra workers to promote various aspects of the brand.
Featuring actress Magda Szubanski the new commercial, created by DDB Sydney, promotes the brand’s customer service and the new personal service commitment which aims to make it easier for customers to get back in touch with the same person on the customer service team.
The spot sees Szubanski posing as a customer service employee before handing over her headset to a Telstra employee who uses the campaign’s tagline “we want to be famous for it”.

Complemented with outdoor, the spot follows on from an ad featuring Jimmy Barnes which launched earlier this month.
Telstra director segment marketing Andy Bateman said when the Jimmy Barnes execution launched: “The three campaigns that follow in this series will each have a slightly different focus, but again will feature famous Australians working alongside and being helped by our real staff in different Telstra workplaces, for example on our network tower sites and in our contact centres.”
Does this mean if you have trouble with Telstra internet you don’t get shunted to the Philippines call centre who are (for want of a better word) totally useless. Forcing you to go into a Telstra store where their sole job is to sell you a new phone?

That a great ad featuring Magda in a Telstra call centre. Do you think they really flew her to India to film it?

Oh come on guys leave her alone it’s a fantastic TVC and she worked really hard on it, especially they would of left her in the lobby for 10 minutes when they said they would be right back and redirected to 6 different areas until she finally got to the set.

The call centre is in The Phillipines but in the ad they don’t look Filipino.
The may have some in Australia but it is rare to get one when calling.
Not that I care where they come from except if I cant understand to the accent.

Hi David,
We don’t censor comments which are relevant to articles, however your previous comments were merely a personal attack on Magda, and therefore not relevant to the conversation.
Feel free to leave relevant commentary and you can be sure it will be posted.

I think these ads are awful and the conceit obscure. What is the point of ‘famous Australians’ ‘playing’ real Telstra employees? What are the ads meant to be saying? Nothing relevant about the service. I’d rather have heard from genuine Telstra staff. Offshore or local, I have to confess I find them helpful and patient. Let’s hear the real voices. The ads make me want to switch supplier. Barnes phones it in and Szabanski’s ‘happy idiot’ act was tired fifteen years ago. She’s embarrassing. Both of them ooze insincerity. We want to be famous for…hiring has beens and outsourcing Australian jobs. No idea why Telstra is wasting money on these ads or who it thinks is going to be persuaded buy them.

We’ll said Pat. This advert makes me cringe! I change station when ever it comes on.

I wrote to Telstra with a complaint 2 months ago. I did not receive a reply. 2 weeks ago I got in touch with the Ombudsman to further my complaint and the next day a man rang me from Telstra who was aggressive and provocative and attempted to dismiss my claim without further action until he realised that he could not access my Wi Fi account and needed to refer it to another department. This other department would get back to me within 48 hours. Nearly 2 weeks later I have not heard from the organisation ‘that cares about our customers and we want to be famous for it’.
So the waiting period has passed for me to get back to the Ombudsman now and I hope to make Telstra famous for their customer care.

These ads are an absolute joke. Blatant lies.
I have been having issues for over 12 months, get handballed from one person to the next and my issue is still not resolved and they are still charging me for a service I am unable to receive. Every time I ask to speak to someone in Australia, I get told “I’m sorry Mam I can’t do that”. They keep telling me it has been ‘escalated’ and then nothing happens, no one calls. An absolute joke. I am irate. Customer Care – please!

These new Telstra ads are catastrophically awful. What were they thinking???!
Celebrities playing-but-not-being Telstra staff?
What is the public meant to make of that? It’s totally confused and confusing, says nothing, does nothing other than embarrass the brand. After such a good start with their new brand look, this campaign unravels it all. Time for Thodey to put on the hob-nail boots and do some arse-kicking.
