Ten ‘extremely disappointed’ with Nielsen after ‘telco issues’ delay Biggest Loser finale numbers
Network Ten has taken aim at Nielsen after “telecommunications issues” forced a 24 hour delay in the release of the Oztam TV ratings figures, including the finale of The Biggest Loser.
It is understood the problems were focussed on Perth where Oztam and its research provider Nielsen was unable to collect data of some panel homes, with the company apologising and saying it will take a day for the issue to be rectified.
“We are extremely disappointed with the technical problems Nielsen experienced and have asked OzTam to fully investigate,” said a Ten spokesman.
However OzTam has passed the blame at Nielsen saying: “It advised this morning that localised telecommunications issues – mainly in Perth – prevented polling of some panel homes this morning.
“They expect to successfully poll those homes later today, so data for yesterday and today will be issued tomorrow as part of the standard ratings data delivery schedule.”
A spokeswoman for OzTam apologised for the delay saying: “OzTam has passed this information on to clients with apologies for any inconvenience.”
Today’s ratings glitch comes amid ongoing delays in the launch of its cross-media measurement platform which was meant to launch in November but which now looks increasingly likely to launch in 2016. That is set to measure viewing on the network’s online viewing services as well as their linear TV channels.
“We are still working with the broadcasters to plug into their players and we have to plug in across each operating system Android, iOS, gaming devices etc,” said Doug Peiffer, CEO Oztam told Mumbrella last week.
“It has taken us a little bit longer (than we would have liked) across each broadcaster and we are now collecting millions of minutes each day. We are getting closer to that point where we can start to release first line reporting.
“If I can get it out before Christmas we will definitely try, but if not it will be first in the new year.”

C’mon Princesses … harden up.
It’s only TV ratings. We’re not saving people’s lives here. And anyway didn’t the TV ratings year end a couple of weeks ago?
The story reads like Ten think that Nielsen deliberately delayed the ratings because it was the finale of TBL.
We’ve had overnight TV ratings for almost a quarter of a century. That is more than 9,100 days that TV ratings have been released the following morning.
So I ask, how many times can YOU remember that there were no TV ratings the following day. Bugger all.
You know what Ten. Sometimes shit happens and the telephone lines and mobile networks fail. This was one of those times. You get no ratings as they would be based on partial data.
So suck it up.
And as you do, pay a thought to the people that live in Perth that were inconvenienced I’d guess way more than your PR department was.
