Ten to launch home shopping channel Spree
Ten will next week launch home shopping channel Spree TV.
The new channel will be run by marketing company Brand Developers.
The channel will be on Freeview’s Channel 15, the channel allocated to Ten for datacasting.
Nine launched Extra last year while Seven has TV4ME.
Spree TV launches next Tuesday September 17.
The channel will push products and offers across home improvement, lifestyle, cooking, fitness and health products.
Hands up if people are really really over these home shopping channels that have sprouted up due to Digital TV…I wish we could wind the clock back and put in a provision that the networks actually use these extra channels for extra shows, content..etc
There is so much stuff that is out in the TV marketplace/in their archives they could use….don’t let our airwaves get taken over by all these lame channels.

NOT ANOTHER WASTE OF SPACE ON DIGITAL TV. HOW ABOUT DEDICATED TV TO SPORT, MOVIES, GENERAL VIEWING AND SHOWS PEOPLE WILL WATCH.

How many channels flogging rubbish do we need FFS? There must be thousands of stooges out there.

How many people actually watch shopping TV? About equal to the number of brain-dead in the community I would think..

1. They are called commercial TV stations for a reason.
2. Sport, Movies and general viewing cost money to buy – shopping ads do not
3. They are not your airwaves, the commercial TV networks licence them to make money.
4. If people didn’t buy stuff off of shopping channels, there wouldn’t be so many

Correction Dave; they ARE our airwaves (sic). The government, on our behalf, licences the use of them (frequencies, that is). I guess we – as citizens – are not too fussy about what use is made of them.

Dave, they are still our airwaves. If it was open-slather, then there would be no restrictions regarding TV classifications, Aus content quotas, etc. It’s perfectly within our rights to expect that datacasting services provide more than just home shopping content.
Of course, the legislation regarding datacasting is so restrictive there is very little option but to run infomercials.
Datacasting restrictions:
*limit datacasting content to that which is not typically broadcasting content ie not “entertainment”.
*Allow for content which is information-based but restricts the capacity to transmit news and video. Extracts from “Category A” programmes (i.e. normal television programmes) and “Category B” programmes (for example news, or current affairs and weather) may be transmitted but must not be longer than 10 minutes duration of video. News programmes may not be presenter-based bulletins.
*Restrictions also apply to multi-channelling by national broadcaster services whose television programmes (other than the core stream) must, in the case of news and current affairs, deal principally or wholly with regional matters (ie. not national news). Other types of programmes are restricted to a range of matters which would be considered of limited “entertainment” value – for example an education program; a science program, a religious program.

What a waste of bandwidth! Why not have a station that is classic movies: Westerns Monday, SciFi Tuesday, Drama Wednesday, Comedy Thursday, Thriller Friday, Naughty Saturday and Family Sunday. for example…anything is better than another shopping station.

Looks like just another waste of good tv. They say “freeview” is great with the free to air stations, but all they seem to be adding is bloody shopping shows. We’re getting more and more like America every day. Just a waste of time. I won’t be watching this crap.

Not another one of these crap datacasting channels what a waste of space on the digital band width.I just delete all these crap so called channels i would like to see the AUSTRALIAN CHRISTIAN CHANNEL come to freeview. It would be better than having these crap channels.

If we believe the “Freeview” marketing hype..the best things in life are free (except on the lame home shopping channels)….

I SO agree with all the previous comments. So many very expensive but totally worthless items that highly irritating sales people (who purport to be experts in their field) attempt to brainwash us into buying. Yet ANOTHER wasted freeview channel that could be put to far better use – eg, movies, good series, etc that are actually entertaining and are so conspicuous by their absence from the original free-to-air channels. My advice – don’t watch them, and they’ll stop appearing like unwelcome mushrooms on our front lawns!!

@stephen (Comment #10): Australian Christian Channel is as much of an informercial channel as SpreeTV, TV4Me and the like. However, it sells just one product 24/7.

Let’s see if you exclude the non-viewing channels on preview that would SBS Radio 1,2,3 ABC Digital Radio , ABC Jazz, TV4ME, SPREE, EXTRA, EXTRA1,TVSN 7 Digital and 7 Digital 1 (same shows on both channels) 12 dedicated channels out of 29 , leaving 17 channels that can be actually watched. To watch any of the shopping channels and not realise that they are all flogging the same products is simply moronic to even say I would love another shopping network like the US? This is just cheap and nasty, repetitive programming, it makes big brother look very intellectual. These channels are for boring people who have the attention span of a goldfish.

Another rubbish channel! We don’t want another shopping channel! Get this crap off! Seriously the tv CEO’s should be embarrassed on the shit they call australian viewing!

Enough already of the home shopping channels! Anyway, with so many home shopping channels, why do the other stations show home shopping programs during the night? It sucks if you have insomnia and there’s nothing to watch at 3:00 in the morning.
