Tennis, cricket, and Hottest 100 drives biggest ABC Listen week on record

Australian Open coverage, cricket commentary, and the biggest musical countdown in the world all combined to see record user numbers on the ABC app last week.

The ABC’s expanded sport coverage — including its first Australian Open partnership since 2015 — and the triple j Hottest 100 countdown saw the ABC listen app achieve its highest weekly users to date in the week of January 21 to 27, with 517,000 people using the app during the seven-day stretch.

The app has had over 1.35 million live sport streams throughout this month, with January 5 the app’s biggest single day on record, with 136,000 streams.

January 5 also brought the app highest daily streams to date, with 136,000 streams on that single day.

ABC Head of Audio Ben Latimer said: “ABC listen is a fantastic product and we have been investing heavily in improvements to audience experience over the last 12 months as well as increasing our sport offering.

“We have just run a dedicated marketing campaign over the summer, reminding audiences that ABC listen is full of incredible live and on demand content, which is accessible anytime, anywhere and always free.”

The campaign seemingly worked, with ABC listen seeing 11% growth year-on-year throughout the summer.”

The app has also recently been added to the Australian Podcast Ranker, last month the network landed 34 of its shows in the top 200 during its first official appearance.
