The Australian wins Newspaper of the Year award, Fairfax’s AFR takes digital prize
The Australian took out the top prize for the second consecutive year at last night’s PANPA Newspaper of the Year Awards.
News Corp’s masthead won in the national/metropolitan category of daily newspaper of the year along with winning the best weekend category. Fairfax’s Australian Financial Review collected the award for national/metropolitan website of the year.

The PANPA Awards, which have their origins in the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association, are now organised by industry trade body NewsMediaWorks, and were presented in Sydney.
Other major winners included Fairfax’s Newcastle Herald, which won regional daily of the year, and regional news site of the year, News Corp’s The Gympie Times won community daily newspaper of the year, and Fairfax’s The Maitland Mercury, which won community news site of the year.
In the digital space, The Australian won best mobile site, while digital publishing innovation of the year went to Fairfax Media’s stuff.co.nz.
This year’s Hegarty Scholarship went to Emily Sweet, from Fairfax’s Australian Community Media.
In an internal note to staff, Greg Hywood, CEO of Fairfax Media, said the company had delivered “an impressive performance.”
“Particular congratulations go to this year’s Hegarty scholarship winner Emily Sweet. The award recognises Emily’s outstanding performance as a young news media executive and the leadership she demonstrates day in, day out in her role as Group Editor, Digital for Australian Community Media,” Hywood wrote.
“All these award wins are great recognition of the strength of Fairfax Media’s quality journalism – and the incredible skills and talents of the many, many people involved in making it happen each and every day for the communities we serve.
“Congratulations to all those involved.”
NewsMediaWorks’ new CEO, Peter Miller, congratulated the winners: “I would like to congratulate all this year’s Newspaper of the Year award winners and acknowledge the incredibly high standard of the region’s print and digital news content, as well as photography, design and technical excellence.
“Our news media brands can stand tall as among the best in the world and this year’s award winners again showed outstanding excellence in each category. The PANPAs are the region’s pre-eminent awards in the news media industry and this year was no exception.”
