The Chaser’s guide to bank advertising

Hundreds of the industry’s brightest creatives and marketers – and a lonely Dr Mumbo – were at the AWARD Awards on Friday night, with Chaser duo Craig Reucassel and Andrew Hansen on hand to offer up their advice to the banks about honesty in advertising.

Reucassel noted it’s becoming even more difficult for marketers and agencies to convince people to give their money to banks than it is to get them to donate to charities, before Hansen added: “It’s a difficult thing this year in particular… No-one has yet managed to make an ad that actually cracks the banks’ key demographic – not yet anyway – of dead people who they’re still charging fees to“.

Hansen then went one step further, offering his creative services for free: “I’ve got a slogan for you. What about ‘Commonwealth Bank. Our service goes above and beyond… the grave'”.

Hansen also voiced his disappointment that BMF’s Sportsbet ad featuring convicted drug cheat Ben Johnson was not eligible for the “AWARD Award Award Award Awards”, with Reucassel revealing the real reason behind the omission.

“It was ruled out for a different reason for the reason it wasn’t allowed to be on TV in the end. That’s cause the judges said there just weren’t enough drugs for an advertising industry.”

Even without Sportsbet in contention, Dr Mumbo calculated there were 143 Bronze, 99 Silver and 48 Gold Pencils awarded on the night.
