The Day Hollywood Died – poster
Rising Pictures has launched the poster for the action/comedy The Day Hollywood Died.
“The poster uses a colour palette and style similar to that of recent American blockbusters, but maintains the raw intensity and mystery of its Australian roots,” said executive producer Sam Kanj.
The film, privately financed and shot in October 2010, will be released theatrically later in the year. It is the directorial debut of Ronnie Riskalla, with a script by K.G. Donovan. The Day Hollywood Died was produced by Riskalla and Donovan alongside Sam Kanj and Nenif David.
The Day Hollywood Died is the story of one man reliving unreliable memories of a heist to try and uncover who he is.
Main cast include: Drew Pearson, Robin Queree, Tommy Bradson, Maroun Joseph and Nenif David.
Normally I am loathe to comment on anything I have not seen. This puts me miles ahead of THE MOVIE SHOW who generally don’t understand anything they have seen. But I am drawn to this because of several things that shit me more than knowing Julia Gillard will probably outlive me:
1. EP Sam Kanj’s lead comment about the poster. What American blockbuster has a poster that sucks as bad as that or has such a lame title?
2. Why promote a film that has like, 90 websites and they all lead to shitty autistic fourth grade bad Sin City ripoff graphics but no trailers (“which were removed”)
3. Upcoming blockbuster? Do they already know the b.o. results? If so, why release the fucker? Just cashflow this blockbuster and save us all 90 mins of pain.
Since the only real info on the film is on IMDB, which lists 118 cast and crew of which only 8 aren’t immediate family of the writers and producers, one wonders if this is a film or a milk bar in Mt. Druitt. Speaking of Mt. Druitt, one of the actor’s trivia lists him as from there and that he wishes “a very private life”. Mate, can I assure you that won’t be a problem after this film. Dream come true : granted
I have to say Encore, did the Press Release come on a napkin with san choi bao stains or was it submitted by telex? I really, REALLY wish all films well esp ones that are privately financed (this one obviously by the daily takings of rentals of 10 Canoes at any Toorak Video Ezy) but WTF are you on about with this shameless ad for a non-film? I will eventually watch it after my cat groomer gives me a DVD from the Caribbean Gardens for $1 since even iiNET and our friends at Bit Torrent won’t lend a pixel to it, but if they were planning to death curse their auds 5 months before the ‘release’ (release from where? a falafel shop? ) they also have another dream come true.

Normally i am loathe comment on anyone i have not met, but honestly, the previous comment’s maker needs to focus more on removing that unnecessary chip off their shoulder and less on bagging those who are brave enough to create privately-funded film.
The poster looks great and I look forward to more stuff from these guys before the film is released. Good Luck!

Firstly let me start by saying this poster displays an interesting style about it and a very catchy title indeed.
Im sorry bobby if your film PREY didnt do to well [COMMENT edited for legal reasons] but really is it necessary to be talking shit like that when you dont even know half of it.
2. if this film had 90 websites it would attract a significant amount of traffic and I would say that, that’s a great way of exploiting the film to create awareness. your info on this is overly exagerated
3. Have you ever heard of promoting your film in a positive manner? why would you not promote it in that way. I guess you missed all that, is that why PREY bombed badly
4 IMDB all people related. I think you need to get your facts straight matey.
You see guys, this is exactly the problem here with our film industry. We have alot of passionate, dedicated people who work hard at creating something and then you get these bullies who have miserably failed in their own productions that its not enough to bag themselves at what they did wrong to do better next time, but rather defame and use profanity to bag other people.
Well why doesnt he say that about his own production.

This film truly deserves to be commended both for it’s ambition and the passion of it’s creators.
I recently visited Australia and by chance a friend introduced me to someone who helped produce the film. They were extremely passionate and I couldn’t help but get excited about everything they told me they were working on to get the film finished. I saw early versions of this key art and I loved it. Stateside we usually deal with stereotypical Aussie pics – ones about the outback and the like. I, like many others, have been getting tired of it. This film gives me hope and I’ll be first in line to see it when it’s released here in NY.
I wouldn’t usually comment except for the above comment. I can only guess that you have an axe to grind with this film (or are jealous), because I’ve shown this poster to a few friends who thought it was a big studio film and they loved it. But your comment exemplifies the biggest problems with your film industry: if it isn’t a stereotypical ‘Aussie’ film then the filmmakers there will trash it. There’s so much infighting. When a friend of mine spent six months at film school over there he said that he hated how everyone would voice disapproval if you did anything that wasn’t very ‘Australian’.
That’s why these guys are going to make it. They’re young and they’re taking a new direction and if you Aussies don’t want them I’m sure as hell that Hollywood will.
Stop criticizing and start supporting your industry. People like you are the reason your industry sucks. You just complain for the sake of it.

As an author myself, I know what it is like when half the world does not agree with what you write. To those who take pleasure in knocking other people’s work, I say: ‘Show us what you have done mate.’ That usually shuts them up because the most vulgar of critics are usually hopeless no-hopers. If a stranger hates the way you play the piano; who cares! However, if that stranger were Mozart, I would take note. So the writer who bagged this film so soon, might be the best in the business. I have no idea. But that kind of loathsome attitude diminishes his standing. I have found that experts love to encourage new talent. So if he had any constructive criticism, and if he were an expert, I think he would have sent a private email to Ronnie Riskalla and the team and offered to assist, advise, encourage, and critique — not rip into them publicly to humiliate them; when all he is doing is showing his low self esteem. These are young people trying their best. If you can assist to make it better, I am sure they would welcome your support. If all you can do is bad-mouth people for loving their craft and having a go, then you need help. I met Ronnie Riskalla recently, and I have not seen the film. If it is a great film, then jolly good. If it is a bad film, then fantastic! By ‘doing’ they are learning and trying and honing their craft. Either way, they will be enrich by it. And I have never ever downloaded free films or music or copied music or accepted a gift of copied music. I never use photos or images from Google. I pay a license for everything! The best way to encourage young and old talent is to not break the law. I shall be buying copies of this film to share with friends. If you really want to help young talent, go by the DVD. Stealing it from bit-streaming is a crime, legally and morally.

Regarding to Bobby Galinsky’s comment,
I am one of more than 6 k fans of TDHD on facebook. The poster and storyline is appealing enough to make me research more about it. I’m also a passionate advocate of Aussie films.
But I’m very surprised to read Bobby’s sabotage comment toward this promising film in Encore magazine. I’m not a big fan of swearing unless it is used in a witty and playful way, and pretty sure these inapproriate languages are banned from major websites.
I hope a reputed magazine like Encore will contact the authors to reconsider before publish any raw, downside negative and bitter comments which will only make the readers annoyed, losing their aspiration to read, and they will judge the decency of the website and leave.
It was hard to read through the first comment, which is unconstructive, counterproductive, and distortedly biased. The author is being disrespectful and sometimes childish. I think he must go through a personal jealousy and hatred toward this particular movie. I don’t see anything wrong with its promotion, it’s up to us the movie goers to judge as we will effect the profit of the film. If it’s bad of course it will pay it’s price through our word of mouth.
When Bobby uses nasty language with unprofessional manner to criticize this movie, I just feel like I should say something about it. I don’t mind constructive criticism but I don’t like when it is said like a personal attack in a public website, we should keep it to ourselves, or talk with close friends and family, one should never share our disgraceful thoughts and ideas to the world (I have petty thoughts too but I don’t let the public to suffer).
All Australian made film deserves decent criticism. My friends and me have watched ‘Mega shark vs Crocosaurus’ on a birthday party, it was like the worst movie I’ve ever seen , we made fun of it and had great laughs about how bad it has been made. It’s impression was left in a good way. But with Bobby’s comment, I just feel so uncomfortable and although I haven’t met him, it’s hard not to be judgmental about those kinds of behavior.

Tina, it’s not up to us to censor people’s opinions, as long as they’re not defamatory. The fact that they have an opinion and share it with others doesn’t mean we endorse such opinions.
All the subsequent comments have criticised that first comment and expressed their support for the film, so the final balance is more than positive.
Thank you for your professional declaration Miguel. Now I really want to watch this movie to see its sequel!

I have to say im quite appalled at the lack of care from Encore.
If these guys are starting out on their first film? do you not think that this defaming them?
Why was certain information edited for legal reasons from Noosa’s comments?
Why did you sensor him ? We all would love to see what Noosa had said.
The fact is there are new laws in place, I would love Encore to tell me what Laws these are? Since you have lawyers advising you.
I was interested in Googling Bobby and one website states that is the producer of Flatliners which is a complete lie. Just. check IMDB.
Its amazing that anything can be written on a website and the editors are not checking if the information is correct.
I wonder Miguel if you will post my comment as well.?
Freedom of speech or not? where do we cross the line?
All the best to these gutsy guys. I love the poster and Its about time someone did something different in this country.
I have seen 50 years of film development in this country and I have seen more bad then good.
Bloody rippa guys make us Aussies proud!!!

@Roger – I really don’t think that Encore should censor people’s opinions. Bobby’s bitter vitriol is actually probably great fuel for the passionate folks at The Day Hollywood Died. And if it isn’t, then they need to toughen their hides, this is a harsh business. If Miguel was left with the responsibility of censorship, then you may as well kiss freedom goodbye, and you will be left with what the Americans live with – the perception of being in a free country but the reality of living in a highly HIGHLY controlled society. I, for one, do not want to have somebody deciding what I should read or not read – even when the attack is on me. And believe me, I have a few films to my name so have been the recipient of some fairly nasty stuff (okay, not quite to the extent of Bobby’s out of control outburst), but it’s all part and parcel of being in an industry where the end result is subjective, and in a country where the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well and thriving (more than it’s film industry is unfortunately). Incidentally, I may be wrong, but isn’t Bobby Galinksi American originally?

PS what should really piss you off though, is the fact that Bobby Galinski APPEARS to be quite happy to admit to pirating movies. SHAME ON YOU Bobby, if that is the case.

I must say that when the comment was made by Bobby about my comment, it didn’t affect me the slightest. It goes with the territory. If you are in this industry well you better toughen up because if you are going to let any Tom dick or Harry affect you then there’s no point pursuing a career in the film industry. I would have to agree with adventure gal. People can voice their opinion in any way or form. It creates a great read for everyone. And besides, let’s leave It up to the audience on whether our posters suck or not. So far I’ve had amazing comments on the key art. It tells me that we are connecting with the audience. If anyone disagrees and thinks it’s crap by all means tell us why and I will be receptive to your feedback and be more than happy to make changes if it’s a valid and constructive criticism

As an Aussie, knowing that the poster is for an Aussie production, my first thought: “Whoever owns the case must barrack for Collingwood.” The poster gives me the impression the film is a gritty crime caper. The tag lines tell me the case is important and I don’t think that is well represented by the poster. My two cents – I suggest a sexing up of the case’s appearance. Maybe the shapely female’s ankle could be shown, also.

Wow, people really DO read these things ! 🙂 Which is good. Well, anyone who knows me in real life or knows my blog or knows my friends (few as they are) knows I tell it like I see it, and am more supportive of local film than probably most of you retards that responded. First of all, I see EVERYTHING that comes out whether I know ahead of time it will be infantile or pathetic because I support all Aussie films, even those from Rolf de Heer because I think one day he will make a film as good as Bad Boy Bubby (again) but he’ll probably be stuck buying lottery tickets in Adelaide to make 12 Canoes subtitled in Aramaic with a special edition for Halal theatres in Punchbowl. Who would know? But more importantly, after the PREY experience (which thank you Noosa (and thanks for not having the guts to show your real name unless you don’t know who your parents are and can’t find out which would be somewhat cliche’ in Queensland) has done VERY well internationally despite being the most hated film in Australia [which I admit, personally hurt…but at the end of the day it’s how it performs for investors] [and thank you Roger Anderson I’d sure like to know what website had me producing Flatliners that’s news to me but at least you used your real name so mebbe you can lead me to correct that website as accuracy and honesty is a good thing] I can assure TDHD people that IF THEY WANT THEIR FILM TO BE SUCCESSFUL they need to fix all the shit that I mentioned both honesty, sometimes satirically, and with best intentions. And I’m glad Sam you have taken it with a grain of salt. I hope it does well, I really do (and again, anyone who knows me knows I mean that… the BETTER YOUR FILM DOES THE BETTER IT IS FOR EVERYONE) There is no professional jealousy here, just a comment that your poster looks amateurish and tells no story. Last year a film called THE SQUARE (a pretty good film!) had a poster that sucked dick and it killed the fucking film. A really solid interesting film, well-made, well-acted, intriguing, and the poster was done by Stevie Wonder after doing his first GHB at Revolver. And for the nongs who at best are dreaming of having a short film at Flickerfest which will be their wankfest dream and chastising me for my “download” quip…. there isn’t a person in Victoria who didn’t have a pirated UNDERBELLY DVD series when it was bannned by transexual retarded judge Betty King so I’m glad you’re so judgemental (sic). I would wager none of you have PAID to watch more than 3 Aussie films per year when I see (and pay….when AVAILABLE TO VIEW IN CINEMAS OR DVD) at least one a month. So with the exception of Sam and his team who I hope have success (and having your FB friends add you and tell you how great they are when the cunts will ask you for free tickets to your opening and not spend $10-$15 to support you because they only read Encore because it’s free and the only listing they will ever have is “coffee slut” on a project) could the rest of you please join Beyond Blue, and then climb over the barbed wire on the Westgate Bridge and kill yourselves. If you’re in NSW, jump off the SHB and don’t put up a sign about your pathetic children we don’t care about. If you’re in QLD, please drown. If in SA or WA or NT you aren’t in the film industry so you don’t count. And Miguel…thanks for the temerity to publish my previous (and this) comment. That makes you better than IF which gutlessly cut the great article that Brendan Swift wrote from the Director’s Conference that was sliced from existence after 24 hours. Much love, b

All this..from the man who’s offering to the world is Prey! I’m not sure if I want to slap you in the face or toast you for being a shameless no talent tool..either way it doesn’t matter, you seem quite content to bury yourself.

That’s some nice ranting, Mr Galinsky. Also, you’ve given me an idea for a Jewish prequel to “Maybe Baby” called “Mebbe Rebbe”. The world needs more Hasidic dramedy.

Thanks Karl for your input, taken on board.
We have done a few other posters to trial in the market and see what works better with the audience. You can view them on the face book page.
and I must say Bobby, you one character of a kind who has the balls to say what they want whenever they want.
As for the poster, if you think its amateurish, that’s your opinion, but that’s why we’ve kept our options open and have a number of different concepts. I’m sure you have already viewed them on Facebook.
The website will be launching soon!

Hi Karl and Sam… it wasn’t ranting… I was sober. [Comment edit] I assume it’s “jim” who doesn’t have a surname because he’s busy working hard at a Red Rooster in Werribee or running coffees at Roving Enterprises. Hey Jim, did you actually see PREY? Did you spend to see it at the one week cinema run or did you actually fork out a week’s wages and hire the DVD? If you actually PAID (like you do for sex as all your friends and family know) then maybe you would have learned something: eg–how does an Aussie raise $3.5m privately during the GFC, hire a has-been aspiring alcoholic Scottish fuckwit who was the ‘wrong’ George Miller (oops!) and then finish the film after investors dash when their super and investments disintegrate (GFC, but you wouldn’t know anything about that since you earn $12 per hour) and after all foreign sales and horror sales fade like your future as you look in the mirror…. we still kick ass domestically with DVD and sell the shit out of it with foreign and get the investors on their way back to profit? Does that hurt you that someone made “a business decision” unlike your mom when the abortionist wouldn’t take EFTPOS? Was it a great film? Not on your life… Bummer. Did it make good business decisions and put us in the driver’s seat for our next project which would be a bit too sophisticated for you since it’s in colour… ? Maybe. Please come on by anytime (when you can afford the taxi because there is no tram to the suburb I live in…) and slap me if you like….. Sam … if you’re happy with the poster and bits… go with it. But if/when you get distribution and the sales agent sez “this poster looks like ….” , listen to them. Go with God. Except Jim, who would be an antheist and ABC listener and steal coins from the church till…
Karl…. Love the high concept… 🙂

Being an 18 year old uni student, who spends weekends watching films and looking at their advertising campaigns, I’d have to agree with Bobby’s comments about the poster itself. Your poster is crap. I’m sorry to be blatantly honestly, but it does not tell a story, nor does it look appealing in anyway or form. It looks like a shitty cover of a game I’d see down a local video store.
I think your other poster with the guy with his back to the photograph would have been better than that. Much more appealing to a younger generation, or anyone for that matter. I hope the that the film has been through a better colour grading process than your poster has.

Its interesting how different people see things differently.

i didnt think this was aussie when i first saw it, i think thats a good thing coz every time i see a poster for an aussie film its so obvious and i turn away straight away. i actually thought this was a hollywood movie which i guess is what you blokes are aimin for so well done. looks cool, googled the one with the guy with his back to the poster and that looks insane too. def looking forward to this movie. forget bout the guys here that say it aint any good, im not sure what theyre lookin at but comin from a guy that goes to the movies alot this is something i would check out. get a website up so i can c more……

Thanks for your comments Robi. That was the whole aim from the beginning.
And Bobby, your right if a distributor was to take it on board and wasn’t happy with it, then yeah from a business perspective I’m more than inclined to change it to target different audiences. That’s the name of the game.

Oh Bobby, you’re living the life…can’t wait to see the next one.
I’m glad that the time it took you to write that little rant of yours was time you didn’t spend writing another one of your shitty screenplays. Look forward to reading the next moronic coke rant.

Hey Bobby..whats with the fixation in your rants on where people live.. and how much they earn? So many directions you could taken to reinforce your point but you seem hell bent on painting a picture of everybody who critiques your crappy film as being from some kind of seething underclass of outer suburban scum (in your eyes)…which is in fact your target audience. So does it go like this?
You make one of the worst Australian films of all time (PREY)
Anybody who has a well deserved swipe at the unpolished turd you created you rant at..sober or wired, who cares?
And then continue to defend what is at the end of the day a film that makes no friggin sense and didn’t at the script level either. Are you carrying that much baggage for being a no talent hack? I suppose it is a life sentence and I’d be pissed as well.
And yeah I caught twenty minutes of PREY on DVD and then gave it the flick…life’s too short.
User ID not verified.
Bobby, perhaps another business decision of yours could be to dial down the blatantly rude and condescending posts. The Australian film industry is small, and your comments are not professional.
Further, your comments increasingly attack others upon worthless assumptions using racist and discriminatory stereotypes in an effort just to put them down so you, and your movie, come out seemingly superior. Perhaps you should take on some of your own advice, or at least try to obtain a quality that you previously praised Sam Kanj for possessing, and that is taking criticism with a grain of salt. In saying that, brushing off a negative comment does not mean retaliating with one of your own. I hope you can make peace with the fact that perhaps not everyone liked your movie, but it doesn’t entitle you to talk down to those who don’t.

Bobby Galinsky,
I cant understand how you can comment and “bag” an Aussie film without even seeing it. Ronnie is not only promoting himself and the actors but trying to strengthen the Australian Film Industry. Wisen up Bobby and get off your high horse.
