The Square’s average beats Titans in the US
Nash Edgerton’s The Square opened at number 59 at the American box office, with U$17,092 on two screens.
The film’s U$8,546 screen average was higher than that of the #1 film Clash of the Titans (Warner Bros.), starring Sam Worthington, which earned an average of U$7,005 on 3,802 screens for a total of U$26.6m.
The Square‘s average was the third highest, behind Everyone Else ($10,810, one screen) and the IMAX film Hubble 3D (U$8,658 at four screens).
The Square was released through Apparition, who also distributed Jane Campion’s Bright Star in September 2009. It received mostly favourable reviews last week, with a 90 percent ‘fresh’ average on Rottentomatoes.
Hmmm. Interesting spin on the story there. Is that how it’s getting reported in the states as well? Seriously, who are the Edgerton’s f**king? Tell me. Someone. Please. I don’t get it.

While Tina Fey-Steve Carell comedy “Date Night” took out “Clash of the Titans” at the overall box office, five indies each found fair-to-decent numbers in very limited debuts. According to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today, Maren Ade’s “Everyone Else,” Peter Bratt’s “La Mission,” Nash Edgerton’s “The Square,” Shirin Neshat’s “Women Without Men” and Tom DiCillo’s “When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors” all reported opening weekend numbers, with “Everyone Else” leading them all in terms of per-theater-average.

On two screens, Apparition’s release of Edgerton’s “The Square” found a similar average, grossing $16,564 for a $8,282 PTA.
“A strong New York Times review launched a good opening for Nash Edgerton’s directorial debut,” Apparition’s Bob Berney commented. “His short, ‘Spider,’ sets up the dark comedy perfectly.”
This is a ridiculous comparison to make. A 2 screen average against a film that’s released on 3802 screens. This is a crazy way to look at it and an unprofessional take on the situation from a mag that ‘s supposed to be professional. This is the sort of spin you expect to see in MX or the Daily Telegraph.

Kim, is a film’s screen average irrelevant? Trade publications in the US have also highlighted The Square’s performance.
We are not saying ‘The Square is more successful than Clash of the Titans’, but that in a VERY limited release, the response was overwhelmingly positive.
