‘There is no place for fear and loathing’, says News Corp’s Eliza Barr after alleged assault

News Corp journalist Eliza Barr has spoken out about the alleged altercation involving herself, News Corp photographer Dylan Robinson and a supporter of Senator Fraser Anning.

Following a press conference for the senator, it is alleged the supporter made intimidatory remarks to Barr, before escalating to violence, punching Robinson and ripping his shirt.

In Saturday’s edition of The Daily Telegraph, Barr said it is essential people working in the press can do their jobs without the threat of violence.

“If you have something to say and you stand by it, there should be no reason to attack the people who factually report it,” she contested.

She also hit out at Anning – who announced his policy of banning Muslim and “black” immigration – noting if he is going to make outlandish claims, he should be prepared to respond to media scrutiny.

“He [Anning] said Muslims and Sudanese people are repeatedly committing acts of violence here against local people,” she wrote.

“Mr Anning can say that if he wants – but he should not be surprised when the media does its job and asks for evidence.”

Barr also defended Cronulla, and the wider federal electorate of Cook which it falls into, saying “hatred does not live here”.

After the incident, News Corp stressed the importance of the safety of its staff.

“The safety of our staff, and their ability to report in news events unhindered is of utmost importance to us, and is a fundamental right for all journalists.”
