‘This is a damaging and sadly well-trodden path’: The Hallway on the Voice debate
An emu and a kangaroo are the voice of reason in The Hallway’s latest work, which urges adland to have more respectful, well-informed conversations on the Voice to Parliament, ahead of the referendum this weekend.
The ‘Don’t Listen to the Galahs’ animated film has circulated on social media since 18 September, but The Hallway has decided to talk about it after observing the streams of bitter and misinformed comments from both sides of the debate, in reaction to ad campaign releases.
The film acts as a bid to appeal to the advertising industry to ignore the vitriolic comments, and instead have more meaningful conversations, as the emu and kangaroo do.
The cheeky ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ voting galahs screech insults to one another in the background, personifying the comments seen and heard by the agency.
Partner and CCO at The Hallway, Simon Lee, said: “Our own industry community seems to be a microcosm of the way the national Voice debate has descended into a battle for who can shout their case the loudest.
“This is a damaging and sadly well-trodden path which far too often sees the all-important facts get lost in the noise,” he continued.
“Our hope is that our ‘Galahs’ film may play a part in encouraging our industry peers, and the broader Australian community to block out the vitriol and have the conversations that will help them make a fully informed choice on October 14.
“If you agree with the intent of this film, please do share it widely,” he concluded.
