Ticketek enters the Jacko races
While Michael Jackson’s death is offering a unique worldwide opportunity for shameless opportunists to cash in, Dr Mumbo is delighted to report that Australian outlets are above that sort of thing.
Take PBL’s Ticketek, for instance. Dr Mumbo was extremely moved to receive the following email from the company:
“Fans and musicians worldwide have been touched by the recent tragic news of Michael Jackson’s death. To celebrate the extraordinary career of the most successful musician of all time, My Ticketek members will have first access to four very special, limited edition T-shirts from Michael’s official merchandise collection, in what is arguably the biggest music merchandise release in history.
“The images on these four shirts were personally selected by Michael himself and are quite simply, iconic. Included in the collection is a piece from the King of Pop’s record-breaking 02 Arena Tour, which will sadly never eventuate.
“As a special offer to My Ticketek members, be among the first to purchase your limited edition official Michael Jackson T-shirts now, and secure a legendary piece of music history!
“Buy Now!”
And indeed the $49.95 T-shirts are special. Dr Mumbo is particularly touched by the good taste of the one depicting Jackson as a zombie.
Now, some cynics might see this as Ticketek cashing in on a job lot of T-shirts from London that are suddenly going cheap. But not Dr Mumbo.
Stay classy, Ticketek.
Yes, but put yourself in their shoes… you’ve just got a factory in China to produce several container loads of concert T-Shirts ready for a major touring act when suddenly the whole she-bang gets cancelled. What do you do? You ship the shirts off to the nearest port (Australia) and hope to flog them off before the hysteria goes cold and you’re stuck with hundreds of thousands of rags… I’m sure there’ll be plenty of suckers lining up to take them off their hands for $50 a pop. This exercise is almost as bad as the British concert promoter encouraging fans to keep their ticket as a “treasured memento” rather than ask for their money back!

I’d be brazen.
Call them what they are – the final tour collection and offer them up direct. It is more honest than trying to spin a line and the fervor of the fans would probably guarantee some sales.
What’s a struggling ticket sales guy to do?
