National radio network Triple M has tested journalist Joe Hildebrand, media strategist Adam Ferrier and radio presenter Matt Tilley for its new national drive show, Mumbrella can reveal.

The tests follow the axing of Merrick and The Highway Patrol from the Southern Cross Austereo-owned station. The previous show, which ends this afternoon after two years, featured Merrick Watts, Julian Schiller and Rachel Corbett.

Mumbella understands the tests were enough of a success that Hildebrand has been offered a role with the radio network but not yet given an answer. Hildebrand, Ferrier and Tilley could not be reached for comment and it is unclear whether the network is seriously considering the trio.

While Tilley delivered his last breakfast show with Jo Stanley on SCA’s Fox FM in Melbourne today, it is understood network bosses are keen for him to continue his career in a nationally syndicated show at drive time.

Hildebrand is best known as opinion editor for News Corp’s Daily Telegraph. He is currently on a sabbatical to coincide with his first weeks as a panelist on Ten’s mid-morning show Studio 10, although he is still writing his column.

Ferrier this week took up a new role as chief strategy officer of the creative agency CumminsRoss, and was  a founding partner of Naked Communications. He is also a regular on ABC radio and the Gruen series.

Southern Cross Austereo declined to comment.
