Tom Thum’s viral TEDx video
Maybe its the opening lines of this YouTube video which made it go viral?
Beatboxer Tom Thum starts his address to TEDx Sydney telling the audience: “My name is Tom and I’ve come here to come clean about what I do for money.”
“Basically I use my mouth in strange ways in exchange for cash…”
The 11 minute clip, posted online just days ago, has already garnered 2.8 million views on YouTube.
TEDx Sydney’s organisers are claiming it is the most watched TEDx, the independently organised TED events, video of all time.
The last TEDxSydney video to do half as well was of course, former Y&R brands boss Nigel Marsh’s ruminations on work-life balance.
When I saw this, my “derivative alarm” started ringing.
Then I remembered “Mr Percival” (Darren Percival) using the exact same technology with his singing act. That was original and clever, because the guy can really sing.
I thought the point of beatboxing is it’s just you and the microphone, so it’s down to your talent, not reliant upon how many audio FX you bring into play – which anyone can do.
The orgiastic response from TEDx luvvies is understandable. After all, they’re busy climaxing on “use of biofeedback interactions as catalysts for reflections and conversations around ideas and experiences of embodiment, health and selfhood…..”
Meh.

Hi Mike,
I suspect that Tom Thum had these talents – and indeed was working – long before Mr Percival went on The Voice last year.
Cheers,

Bobby McFerrin was doing this before this guys was born!

I remember when Ted talks used to be useful and interesting. TedX variants are really diluting the Ted brand, which is a shame.

Rebecca, this was a TEDxSydney performance not a ‘talk.’ TED HQ event has always interspersed performances in between talks – this is no different.
