Triple J considering moving Hottest 100 countdown from Australia Day

Triple J is said to be in “serious talks” over the prospect of axing the Hottest 100 music countdown on Australia Day and moving it to a less sensitive date in the year.

According to Pedestrian TV, “multiple sources” have said ABC bosses are considering shifting the countdown from January 26 as pressure intensifies to respect the wishes of Indigenous communities.

Inclusion of the Hottest 100 countdown on Australia Day – or ‘Invasion Day’ as it is known to many – has long been as a controversial issue with Indigenous communities and organisations who insist it is insensitive and inflammatory to celebrate the occasion.

The countdown is synonymous with young Australians gathering at barbecues and drinking and attending festivals on a day that marks the arrival of the First Fleet.

A video created by Buzzfeed showing what Australia Day means to Aboriginal people has been shortlisted for best video at the Publish Awards on Thursday.

According to Pedestrian TV, staff meetings at Triple J have been heated, with opinion split on whether the countdown should be shifted.

Some feel it is the right move to take, while others believe it is crumbling to public pressure and robbing Australians of something that is intrinsically part of Australia Day.

Triple J has been approached for comment.
