Tropfest organisers hint at ‘epic comeback’

Organisers of the world’s largest short film festival Tropfest have hinted at an “epic return”, after a six-year hiatus.

The festival’s founder John Polson posted a not-so cryptic message on Tropfest’s official Instagram page, as well as on his personal account, hinting at a return.

“We’re not saying Tropfest is about to make an epic comeback,” the message said.

“We’re just saying if something big were brewing behind the scenes, you might want to stay tuned.” The post asked followers to “like and share if you believe the world needs Tropfest back.”

In late April, the Tropfest account posted: “We’ve been quiet. But not idle.”

Tropfest

Tropfest claims to have been the biggest short film festival in the world. It was launched in 1993 by Polson, at the Tropicana Caffe in Darlinghurst, Sydney, which is where it got its distinctive name.

The festival grew to hold annual screenings in Sydney’s Domain to audiences of over 100,000. In 2015, the festival ran into financial trouble and was cancelled, before being revived the following year.

Tropfest was paused during the pandemic, however Polson shared unrealised plans for a 2023 return, telling Honi Soit, “we are now finally entertaining opportunities for relaunching Tropfest, hopefully for our 30th anniversary.”
