TV consumption grows on alternative screens

A survey commissioned by the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association found that one in three households regularly use devices such as laptops, tablets and mobile phones to view television programming, in addition to standard TV sets.

“These findings clearly show the growing appetite of Australians for more options to access television programming anywhere and anytime through a mix of devices”, said CEO Petra Buchanan.

The survey included more than 300 households and found that 34 percent are watching programming on screens other than their TV sets. Under 25s tend to use the iPod/iPhone, while 34-44 year-olds use the iPad most.

According to this study, subscription TV viewers watched 4:35 hours of TV per day on their traditional set, compared to 4:07 hours for all viewers. In addition, 81 percent said they decided to subscribe to pay TV because of its choice of programming, and 52 percent claimed the variety they found on pay TV was “not found elsewhere”.
