TV Wrap: AFL delivers for Seven over Easter but Nine takes the week

Television ratings over the Easter period took a hit overall, with numbers down across all the networks, but Seven will be pleased with its long weekend results as its AFL coverage kicked more goals for the network.

Seven managed to take out the network share stakes on Thursday, Friday and Saturday ahead of rival Nine, but it wasn’t enough to wrestle another weekly ratings win away from the latter.

Nine won the Easter non-ratings week 14 with a 31.3% network share ahead of Seven’s 26.1%. The ABC secured 17.6% while Ten had a 16.5% share.

But Seven had plenty of good results over the weekend, as viewers flocked to its AFL coverage, starting with its Thursday Night Football coverage which delivered 522,000 metro viewers.

It was the top-rating non-news program of the night ahead of Ten’s Gogglebox, and helped Seven to a 32.8% share win over Nine’s 24.4%.

Friday night saw Seven once again take the share win, with 29.8% over Nine’s 27.1%, despite Nine’s Friday Night NRL Live (328,000 metro viewers) beating Seven’s AFL: Friday Afternoon Football (214,000 metro viewers)

Seven’s AFL: Saturday Night Football delivered another 369,000 metro viewers and Seven would go on to win the night with 31.8% compared to Nine’s 28.7% for Saturday.

That’s where the momentum shifted, with Nine taking out Easter Sunday on a 30.7% share ahead of Seven’s 25.9%.

The top rating entertainment program of the evening went ABC’s Bluey Easter Special, which took in a hefty 607,000 metro viewers, and was also the third most-watched show on Sunday overall.

The return of Married at First Sight on Monday night helped Nine to a dominant win, with a 35.8% network share over Seven’s 24.9%.

The program, which as in several previous seasons, has again seen viewers mobilise and start a change.org petition over treatment of contestants, reached a series high 1.121 million average metro viewers on Monday night.

Seven’s AFL Monday Afternoon Football garnered 464,000 metro viewers on Easter Monday.
