Underbelly assassinates the opposition
Last night’s Underbelly debut was exactly the ratings juggernaut Nine had been hoping for, delivering a massive 2.6m audience.
According to preliminary ratings from OzTam, the back-to-back double episode took Nine to a massive victory in the second night of the official ratings period. The network took a 39.5% share, leaving Seven with 23.5% despite its healthy news audience,s and Ten with a weak 16.7%. The ABC got a news-driven 13.8% share, while SBS took 6.3%.
The strong showing – which peaked at 2.8m – was much bigger than last year’s series, which saw a top audience of 1.7m, although that was hampered by legal action initially preventing it being shown in Victoria. Nine says it was the highest rating Australian programme launch of all time.
Meanwhile, the bushfires aftermath continued to drive large news audiences, with Seven News taking an audience of 1.7m and Seven’s Today Tonight 1.5m.
The top ten:
- Underbelly Episode 1 – Nine 2.6m
- Underbelly – Episode 2 – Nine 2.4m
- Seven News 6:30pm – Seven 1.7m
- Seven News 6:00pm – Seven 1.7m
- Customs – Nine 1.5m
- Today Tonight – Seven 1.5m
- Nine News – Nine 1.5m
- A Current Affair – Nine 1.3m
- Two and a Half Men – Nine 1.2m
- The 7:30 Report – ABC 1.2m
If the quality of last night’s launch is anything to go by, viewers will be turning off 9 in droves. Compared to the orginal Underbelly, A Tale of Two Cities has all the clout of a Neighbours re-run. Pure rubbish.

I Don’t know what square eyes is talking about. Underbelly 2 was incredibly well done. As a rule sequals are usually pretty rubbish. Underbelly managed to hit the nail on the head and I think in the coming weeks, we’ll see that hammer drive home hard!!!
