Vega’s Tony Squires shuffles onto the Twitter stage

This morning was a momentous moment in Sydney radio history with Vega breakfast presenter Tony Squires sending his first tweet.

Fair to say the baby boomer audience of the Tony, Bec & Mikey show has not responded en masse to the @squirest profile in the hours that have followed.

At the time of writing Squirres has picked up just six followers. Which leaves him somewhat behind the 372,865 alleged followers of the rival Kyle & Jackie O Show. Although, funnily enough, they’ve not tweeted since July 28.

Indeed, one got the sense that perhaps the Vega’s trio’s research into the topic had been somewhat half-arsed when one of them revealed that he’d been checking out Twitter and just read Stephen Fry’s tweet about being stuck in a lift – an incident that actually happened more than six months ago.

Still, do treasure Squires’ pithy words in his only message to date:

“Do I have enough time to go to the loo during Coldplay’s Viva La Vida?”

Literary critics will no doubt agree that in that one sentence he encapsulates so much: The self doubt at the heart of every broadcaster; the eternal struggle of man versus time;  the fact that although we may see him as a heroic figure, he’s a mere man with bodily functions just like the rest of us; and perhaps just a hint of ennui of living la vida at Sydney’s least-listened-to commercial radio station.

Truly, 140 characters can say a lot.
