Vikki Campion drops privacy complaint against The Daily Telegraph
Vikki Campion – who came to the country’s attention back in February when The Daily Telegraph revealed she was pregnant with then deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce’s child – has dropped her complaint against the News Corp-owned paper.
Campion and Joyce faced criticism when they accepted what was reported to be $150,000 for a paid interview with Seven, with News Corp in particular highlighting the hypocrisy of asking for privacy from one media outlet, while profiting from telling your story to another.
Joyce told reporters in Canberra the interview was necessary as seeking privacy was not working.
“We tried just burning this out and that didn’t work,” he said.
Campion had complained to the Press Council, however has since told 9Finance she just wants to focus on motherhood, not pursuing the complaint.
“I filed a Breach of Privacy complaint when heavily pregnant in an attempt to prevent my baby from being hounded by media after his birth, however he was papped at three weeks of age and drones used over our hose,” 9Finance reports her as saying.
“To stop being chased, we agreed to an interview [with Seven]. I have since approached the press council to close the complaint as I just want to focus on motherhood.”
In response, The Daily Telegraph has today clarified it was not one of the media outlets using drones to photograph Campion and her family.
The Press Council confirmed the case is now closed.
