Vinyl Group makes chief marketing officer redundant

Vinyl Group has made more redundancies this week, including its chief marketing officer Alli Galloway.

Galloway took to Linkedin on Wednesday night to share the news.

“After nearly 20 years in the music industry, I’ve finally earned a badge I hadn’t collected yet: redundant. Turns out, it doesn’t come with a trophy… but it does come with a lot of reflection and gratitude,” she wrote.

“This change feels like the right nudge at the right time. I’ve always been driven by curiosity, innovation, collaboration and motivating others – and that mission hasn’t changed.”

Galloway had been with Vinyl Group for nearly four years, joining in 2021 from Warner Music Australia.

She hinted that she was not alone, adding: “To my fellow colleagues who were also affected – keep your chin up.”

When approached by Mumbrella, Vinyl Group declined to comment, nor did it confirm how many staffers were laid off.

Josh Simons, CEO of Vinyl, has however previously made it clear that this year is about integrating its media brands, evidenced by the Vinyl Media rebrand in February.

Last month, Vinyl Group also made the editor-in-chief at Mediaweek, Emma Shepherd, redundant.

Shepherd was hired as Mediaweek’s editor-in-chief in October, along with Frances Sheen, who joined the publication as head of content. The same month, Kellie Brown, Mediaweek’s director of digital, marketing and strategic partnerships left the company. And later this month, Sheen will step back to working just two days a week.

“This change allows me to continue driving editorial success with the team at Vinyl Media and take on new consultancy projects (more to come on that soon),” Sheen wrote on Linkedin recently.

Vinyl Group has also been dealing with a couple of unfair dismissal cases.

Luke Girgis, who sold The Brag Media to Vinyl, is suing the media conglomerate in the NSW Supreme Court for unfair dismissal and the consequent loss of a $2 million bonus payment.

In its statement to the market about the Girgis case, Vinyl strongly refuted the former CEO’s claims and made a counter allegation: “Following an external investigation, Mr Girgis was terminated for serious misconduct, including but not limited to financial misconduct.”

Meanwhile, former head of The Brag Media, Jessica Hunter, took Vinyl to the Fair Work Commission in March with her claim scheduled to be heard late May. Sources say Hunter’s case was resolved “weeks ago”.
