Dr Mumbo

Was Kyle Sandilands auditioning for a new job?

Dr Mumbo asks you to name one person you wouldn’t expect on stage, hosting Paramount’s (owner of Network Ten) biggest media event of 2023 so far.

Kyle Sandilands would probably not be one of the names that come to mind, as Sandilands is also one of the main selling points of Seven’s reboot of Australian Idol, which is currently juking it out with Ten’s Australian Survivor in a prime-time ratings war.

Kyle woos Paramount execs on stage at its new show launch party

But alas, Dr Mumbo was one of many surprised faces when he appeared on stage with Paramount ANZ executive vice president and chief content officer, Beverley McGarvey, promoting the company’s biggest new drama show, The Last King of the Cross, which launched today on Paramount+.

Idol and Survivor are locked in a ratings battle, fighting for second place as Nine’s Married at First Sight continues to run away with a nightly win.

With Survivor looking like it has the staying power over Idol, getting the edge in recent ratings reports, and with the tabloids reporting on in-fighting at camp-Idol, is Kyle angling for a jump over to the rival network, cosying up with one of its bosses?

Sandilands has been on McGarvey and Ten’s talent roster previously, with shows like the early run of Australian Ido, and as recently as 2018 for ‘Trial by Kyle’, an experiment by the network that didn’t pan out as either party may have hoped.

With global Paramount execs in the room for the company’s no-holes-barred launch event for the Underbelly-inspired Kings Cross drama, Sandilands put on a great audition. He was working the crowd, McGarvey, the show’s on-screen lead Lincoln Younes, and the real-life titular character (and Sandiland’s mate), John Ibrahim.

All of this in a big week where a merger between Seven and HT&E has been back at the top of the news agenda, Sandilands being the jewel in the crown of ARN’s radio stable.

Or maybe Dr Mumbo is just reading too much into all of this…
