‘What was the point of speaking out if perpetrators are not called out?’: Karl Stefanovic reacts to Nine’s cultural report
Karl Stefanovic has spoken out about the shocking report handed down on Thursday afternoon regarding Nine’s workplace culture.
Speaking on Today this morning, Stefanovic expressed his sympathies towards the victims, as well as his anger that not enough has been done.
“I genuinely, genuinely feel for the women who have given testimony,” he said.
“I can’t imagine how hard that was and the courage that it took. Many people are hurting.
“They feel like what was the point of speaking out if perpetrators are not called out. I asked the same question yesterday and it’s my understanding several investigations are now underway and we have to be patient for the process of all that. It’s essential and it’s critical.
“I want to say it’s not about us, but there are good men who do work here at Nine, who find what happened absolutely intolerable, who struggle to understand how we didn’t know more and do something, how it grieved you.
“I feel like we have all in a way let you down. I love my work colleagues here, women I have the honour to present with, women on the floor of this great show, women behind the scenes who make us all better. I’m grateful.
“Women are this company and they are the way forward. They will show the way.
“We just have to listen and act but it’s going to be up to all of us now to do better, to say ‘enough’. This stops now.”
The report included 22 recommendations to refresh the workplace and found “very high prevalence rates of abuse of power or authority (62%)” in the Broadcast Division.

I never watch Nine’s Today, mainly 2 reasons. Lots of rubbish dressed up as News that goes on too long and I can’t stand that Karl thing. Nine could save a lot of money if he was gone. His brother Peter is more palatable. ( Don’t watch much on Sunrise either.)

What about years ago when Karl was complicit with the treatment Jessica Rowe received and about the decision to “bone” her? This culture is nothing new at that channel.

How does someone like Karl who is a leading high profile star, who has been at the Nine organisation for ages, not be aware of the fact 25 % of his collegaues experienced sexual harrasment, or that 59% experienced discrimination, as teh report says
Do men like him ‘turn a blind eye’, and pretend not to notice? Because it suits them not to get involved or speak up?
Or is he really saying he never saw it / never knew. So all these indiscretions of appaling behaviour happened all around him at precisely when his back was turned?
Either way, its unbelievable a man in his position of power, with the longevity he has, can claim he is surprised and schocked at whats been going around him.

I applaud Karl for his thoughts and throughly agree, but I think is more about abuse of power across the board it’s not gender specific

When your on the package Karl’s on. Are you going to be that person that calls it. So then your on the street. What’s your go then. It’s always been a crap industry. All networks. Abc included. It’s a time of self review with most networks as they’re all loosing heaps. No huge advertising contracts just hanging off the tree. So they’re all looking at what they can do . Clean out. But can they afford the payouts. The board of directors ate as complicit.
